Brand Crush: Shade London Gets Meshy

October 18, 2016 by loxandleather 3 Comments

In case you couldn’t tell from my previous posts, I shop at Dolls Kill a lot. Nasty Gal used to be my go-to for online shopping, but their quality has gotten a lot shittier and their sizing has been off for me lately (I’ve gotten an XXS and had it be huge on me). Plus, Dolls Kill has way more interesting stuff, even if their return policy is a little whack (you can only get store credit rather than a full refund, which is a bummer but not the worst if there are a million things you want from their site like me).

Anyways, a brand that was recently added to the Dolls Kill site is SHADE London, and I’m fucking obsessed with all their shit.

I’d love to have ordered a million things from them, but because I’m broke I just ordered one thing, a bodysuit. I originally got this bodysuit in an XS, but it was teeny-tiny and I could barely get it over my legs. The small fits me a lot better, although it’s still pretty snug on my boobs and my hips. One thing I like about the piece is that the bodysuit has a thong bottom and the front straps on the chest can be moved as far in or out as you like them (although in my case that doesn’t really minimize the cleavage).

The style reminds me a lot of Bao Tranchi’s designs, but at a much lower price point, which is always good news for me.

I also got these really versatile and comfy pants from the Dolls Kill site, the brand is Gypsy Warrior. They’re slightly see-through like lots of leggings made from this material are, but overall I’m pretty happy with them.

This bodysuit also comes in nude, which I was considering getting because I already have so many black bodysuits…but then I caved and figured you could never have too much black, right?

Scroll to the bottom of the post for outfit details and some more pieces I love from SHADE London!

I CE NYC: Is Rolled Ice Cream Worth The Hype?

September 23, 2016 by loxandleather 1 Comment

If you keep up with “trendy” Instagram-famous type foods, you’ve probably seen rolled ice cream. It’s pretty much your standard ice cream, except it’s flattened out and rolled like sushi. Actually, it’s very much like sushi rice in a way. You can eat rice free-form in a big bowl, or you can roll it into sushi.

I hadn’t tried this rolled phenomenon until last night when my friend who goes to NYU took me to his favorite spot on campus. When I say favorite, I mean favorite, he legit didn’t even have to look at the menu to give his order, lol.

I, on the other hand, had major menu anxiety (as usual) when confronted with four different categories that I had to choose from. I ended up going with coffee ice cream, with fudge mix-ins, topped with an oreo, and drizzled with caramel sauce. Yum, right?

As you can see, the ice cream is very photogenic and adorable. As for the taste, I’m not sure I was sold. I liked the effect of almost cutting into ice cream instead of scooping it, and the texture was nice. But the fudge mix-ins were totally lost (I couldn’t really taste them), and the flavor of the ice cream itself wasn’t very strong.

When I think mix-ins, I think Dairy Queen blizzards or some shit, and this fell flat. I also wish they had crumbled up the oreo instead of just plopping it on top. Maybe prettier for presentation (although debatable), but kind of made it hard to eat with the ice cream.

Would I eat it again? Sure. Would I go out of my way to get it? Probably not.

P.S. I really wish they had cookie dough balls as an option for on top…just a thought.

This Brooklyn Spot Has A Secret Menu With A Jalapeño Mac Burger

September 7, 2016 by loxandleather No Comments

Bushwick, Brooklyn, is one of those parts of town that’s in the process of being gentrified.

This means that everyone who lived there previously is getting pissed, and everyone who never set foot there before is now flocking there to rent an apartment or try a new hipster coffee shop.

I used to work in Bushwick about two years ago, and it’s changed so much! When a friend of mine invited me to dinner/drinks at a place called Forrest Point, I was amazed that it was the same part of town.

To start, I had the Genji Gimlet which included Brooklyn Gin, Dry Sake, Green Chartreuse, Sesame Honey, Lime, Yuzu, and Toasted Sesame Tincture. It was really good and easy to drink. I also got this Rebecca Minkoff bag for sale at TJ Maxx for just $40 the other week, so figured I’d showcase that too.

For dinner, I was set on the eggplant sandwich but then the waitress decided to elaborate upon their “secret” burger menu and she literally saw my eyes light up when she mentioned a jalapeño mac and cheese burger. So my friend’s girlfriend and I decided to split the eggplant sandwich and the burger so we could have both. Always a great decision, because I always want to try everything possible.

Grilled Eggplant Sandwich: Marinated eggplant, roasted tomatoes, grilled halloumi, watercress, lemon-caper pesto.

For dessert, we went across the street to Bake Shop, which was allegedly named as having the best chocolate cake in NYC or some shit. Once we saw that award, we were convinced. I got a Brooklyn Blackout cupcake and I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t disappointed.

The frosting was overly rich and the cake was dry. I’ve had way better cupcakes in NYC. I really like Baked By Melissa because I can get so many flavors without feeling sick afterwards, and Georgetown Cupcakes never disappoints, although I may be partial because I’m from DC.

Thankfully, even though the cupcake was sub-par, they did have a really cute side wall for a photo op…
