Missguided Swimwear Review: Do You Get What You Pay For?

April 13, 2018 by loxandleather 4 Comments

Looking for an honest and unsponsored Missguided swimwear review before ordering a cheap bikini from overseas? I’ve got you covered.

To be honest, after ordering from Missguided once, I told myself I’d never order from them again. I ordered one of those silk slip dresses (because I thought nobody could f that up) during one of their many 50% off sales, but when I received it, it was a very different color and super unflattering. I paid $15 or so to return it, and then months later realized that I’d never gotten my money back. When I reached out to their customer service team, they told me they never received my return and they couldn’t reimburse me unless I had proof of shipping. My dumbass did not save the receipt from months ago (lesson learned), so instead of paying $30 for an ugly dress, I paid $30 for nothing — and I was bitter!

For that reason, I chose to order my Missguided swimwear from ASOS, a company that has free returns, fast shipping, and pretty good customer service (at least in my experience with them).

I’d never purchased a swimsuit from ASOS or Missguided before, but as you might know I’ve been searching for bikinis that cover up the incisions on my lower belly, and this suit was pretty spot-on to what I was looking for. I liked that it still had major boobage potential, had a thong back, and was high-waisted, but not high-waisted enough to cover my belly button (or so I thought).

I didn’t have high hopes for the quality (or fit) of the bikini, but I figured it was under $30 and worth a shot, especially since it’d be free to return it.

And honestly? I am so pleasantly surprised!

Missguided Swimwear Review: The Dirty Deets:

While the bikini looks completely different on me than it does on the model, I expected that part (and actually prefer the way it looks on me). One of my friends who was thinking of buying the same suit was worried about it looking “too sporty,” and I think if you’re curvier than the model on the ASOS site, you won’t have that look.

The color is a nice bright red and the fabric is slightly stretchy but still feels like it’s sucking you in in all the right places (this might also be because I probably ordered one size too small).

I ordered a US size 0. I probably would have normally gone for a 2 since I know Missguided can run small (as do most UK brands when compared to US brands), but I’ve had bad luck with online purchases being too big lately, so I decided to go for the 0. If I had tried it on in-store, I probably would have gone up a size or two in the top, since there’s definitely some squish action going on for me. But, not enough for me to deal with exchanging it, apparently.

Overall, I’d definitely order a Missguided bikini again. The price is right for the quality, and their suits are always on top of the hottest swim trends (which is perfect for the crazy swim trends you want to try for one summer and ditch the next). That being said, I would probably stick to ordering from the ASOS website rather than the Missguided site, unless I knew for sure that I wouldn’t have to return what I was ordering. Obviously, the selection is smaller on ASOS, but it’s not bad (they have 157 Missguided swim pieces currently).

How To Wear Crazy Bikinis Without Getting Crazy Tan Lines

March 23, 2018 by loxandleather 5 Comments
crazy tan lines loxandleather cover

Trying to avoid crazy tan lines from your crazy new swimsuit? Look no further.

So one of my friends recently DMed me asking how I avoid crazy tan lines from all my wild swimsuits, and I thought it’d make a great blog post!

Here are my tried and true tips for rocking a intricate swimsuit without having crazy tan lines the next day.

crazy tan lines loxandleather3

1. Apply Sunblock Strategically

My #1 rule when it comes to sunblock? Put it on while naked.

Don’t even think of putting your swimsuit on and trying to put sunblock on in the places that aren’t covered. It never works. You’ll end up with a burn right around your bikini line — and did you know that UV rays can actually go through your swimsuit fabric?

2. Be a Quick Change Artist

When you head out to the beach or pool for the day, it’s difficult to know how much time you’ll want to spend there, what the sun situation will be like, etc. So, when I’m baring it all in a suit that gives me crazy tan lines, I pack an extra, non crazy suit in my beach bag.

First off, my teeny suits take up zero space anyway, and as a bonus it’s perfect to change into if you’ve gone swimming and don’t want to be hanging around in a wet suit. Plus, two suits for the day means double the photos you can take for Instagram!

Oh yeah, and obviously, changing suits halfway through the day means that you probably won’t get crazy tan lines, and even if you do, they will fade fast.

3. Turn Over (Or Don’t)

There’s a good chance that some of your swimsuits are kind of like mullets — business in the front and party in the back. Actually, lots of my swimsuits are opposite, crazy and strappy in the front, but pretty normal in the back. If I’m planning on laying out in a suit like that, I’ll just lay on my stomach all day and tan my back. If your suit is going to give you crazy tan lines on both sides, then make sure to turn over frequently so that you don’t get too much color on one side, that’ll take you straight to crazy tan line city.

4. Save Your Crazy Suits For The End of Your Vacay

I know this is problematic to say, but I’m going to say it anyway.

I’m always torn on vacations when to wear my “cutest” or “best” outfits and bikinis because at the end of vacation I’m the tannest, but there’s a good chance I’ve also been stuffing my face all week and not working out, so my abs might not be as noticeable as they were at the beginning of the trip (if at all).

Regardless, when it comes to tan lines, there’s another reason to save your intricate suits for the end of the trip — it’ll help you avoid whacky tan lines. By the tail-end (or at least the middle) of your trip, you’ll (hopefully) already have somewhat of a base tan. Yes, you might get some lines from wearing a strappy bikini on day 6 of your vacay, but it’ll probably even out if you wear a different suit on day 7.

Usually I pack at least a few “standard” strappy bikinis (or, micro bikinis) for optimal tan lines that I wear at the beginning of the trip, and I whip out my wild one pieces towards the end.

I hope these tips helped you to not look like a zebra after wearing a trendy-ass Minimale Animale bikini this summer! If you have other tips feel free to comment below 🙂

Get The Tom Ford Red Leopard Look For Less (And From Amazon)

March 17, 2018 by loxandleather No Comments
red leopard tom ford lox cover

Want the Tom Ford all red leopard look for under $100? I’ve got you.

I’m definitely not the type of person who live-streams fashion shows, but when I saw people sharing photos of all red leopard looks from Tom Ford’s Fall 2018 Ready to Wear show, I was like, “damn, that looks familiar!”

Funny enough, I put together a super-similar all red leopard print look a few months before (and obviously didn’t post the pictures until now, because I’m always behind).

But, in a way it’s kind of good I waited, because now I feel more validated in my red leopard fashion choices and maybe you’ll be more inspired to rock an all-red leopard look since it’s gotten Tom Ford’s stamp of approval.

Obviously, my outfit wasn’t originally supposed to mimic what was on Tom Ford’s AW 18 runway, so mine is much skimpier and much less high-fashion (which is never really my style anyway). So don’t come at me with, “this looks way cheaper than the Tom Ford look.” Like, yes, obviously it does, because the entire outfit cost me under $100.

I’ve had the tights for the longest, I originally purchased them from Urban Outfitters because I was young, naive, and didn’t realize I could get better quality tights for way cheaper from Amazon. You can find a similar pair here.

The beret is from Dolls Kill, and you might have seen it in my other post on “how to wear a beret without looking like the type of girl who obsesses over Paris.” It’s sold out on Dolls Kill, but this Amazon version is super similar. If you want my version in white, you can get it here.

The dress is legit a body stocking, which I love because that means it’s perfectly form fitting no matter your size. It’s definitely a little skimpy (and probably intended to be worn in the bedroom), but I say wear it to the club because it’s hot. I got it on Yandy, but surprise, surprise, it’s also available on Amazon!

I actually did purchase the shoes on Amazon after @yisaloo got a pair in pink and said they were legit. Unfortunately, even with socks, I don’t find them very comfortable. Maybe they’re just not meant for my foot shape? At least they look good in photos, I guess.

Also, I’ve been trying to figure it out but Google is of no help. Does anyone know if there’s a word like monochromatic, but meant for patterns? It feels like there should be, and if there was, I’d be using it in this post.

Anyway, here’s to dressing like a low-budget, Prime version of Tom Ford’s AW 18 looks. You deserve it, bb.

Beret: JTC Women’s Beret Hat, $8, Amazon

Earrings: Red Hoop Earrings, $8.49, Amazon

Dress: Red Cheetah Print Chemise, $14.50, Amazon

Tights: Berkshire Leopard Lace Textured Control Top Tights, $6.99, Amazon

Shoes: Mary Jane Platform Shoe 4 Inch Heel, $37, Amazon

Where To Buy Red Patent Leather Ankle Boots For Under $100

March 8, 2018 by loxandleather No Comments
red patent leather ankle boots cover

Looking for cheap red patent leather ankle boots? I’ve got you covered.

If you know me, you know I have a “thing” with the color red.

A little over a year ago, I saw the cutest pair of red patent leather ankle boots on ASOS marked down to around $50. I thought about them hard, but I thought about them for too long, because they were sold out just a few days after I first spotted them.

Fast-forward a few months later when I really leaned in to my all red errythang phase, and I really wished I had bought the boots. This coupled with the fact that I was seeing patent leather boots everywhere, styled in ways that I realized I could totally rock on a daily basis.

Thankfully, at the end of last summer, on one of the rare days I was walking through a mall (I was killing time after a meeting), I spotted a nearly identical pair of red patent leather ankle boots in Forever 21. They were a little more of a “sock boot” than the original pair, but they were also only $30, and the last pair just happened to be in my size.

I don’t think I fully understood how much I’d wear them even while buying them, but ever since I bought them they’ve basically been my go-to shoe for daily looks where I want to look slightly more pulled together. Also, they’re shockingly super comfortable!

Unfortunately, the exact pair I have is no longer stocked, but I’ve found similar pairs at similar price points and highlighted them all below 🙂

6 Pairs of Red Patent Leather Ankle Boots For Under $100

1. This Pair With a Little Extra Boost

Red Patent Leather Ankle Boots loxandleather_dollskill

Sugar Thrillz Shinin’ Like a Ruby Ankle Boots, $78, Dolls Kill

These are super similar to the ones I have, just with more of a heel (and platform) and a slightly higher price-tag. But, Dolls Kill has been having tons of sales lately, so you can probably snag them for less if you’re willing to wait.

2. These Snakeskin BBs

Public Desire Chile Patent Ankle Boots, $60, Dolls Kill

The pointy shape on these just gives them a little more of a chic vibe, just like the snakeskin does.

BUY THEM HERE

3. These Shorties

Red Patent Leather Ankle Boots loxandleatherninewest
Nine West Women’s Announcer Synthetic Ankle Boot, $74, Amazon

These are definitely the “classiest” and most work appropriate of the bunch, although as someone who wears red patent ankle boots quite frequently, let me warn you that you’ll still turn quite a few heads. These are available for prime shipping so you can get them ASAP!

4. These Nicer Duplicates of Mine

Red Patent Leather Ankle Boots loxandleather_chinese laundry

Chinese Laundry Women’s Raine Fashion Boot, $89, Amazon

These look pretty identical to my Forever 21 pair, but nicer. Of course, they’re more expensive too, but not by much. These are also available with Prime shipping <3

5. For Those Looking For Something Edgier

Pleaser 6″ Boots, $79, Amazon

Okay, I realize these are probably not what you’re looking for, but just in case they are…I figured I’d include them.

6. For Those Wanting The Cheapest Option

Red Patent Leather Ankle Boots loxandleather asos

Public Desire Empire Red Block Heeled Ankle Boots, $56

So, I realized when finishing up this list that nearly all the items are around $70, which is kind of a bummer because I got mine for $30. So, I searched a little bit more and found these Public Desire boots for $56, which isn’t too bad! Plus, if you’re a student you should definitely sign up for ASOS’ student discount program and you can score some additional $ off.
